Hello All,
Here goes a first attempt at a Flying Squirrel newsletter of sorts. PLEASE reply to this e-mail if you do not wish to be on this mailing list!! I will try to keep it short and just keep you posted once a month or so with some "Save the Date" events and other goings on at the cafe. Here's what's happening in November:
Second Saturday Art Opening: Wendy Moreiko Photography
This Saturday, November 14, 3-6pm
It's fun to have a variety of art donning the walls at the Flying Squirrel. It's also fun to have artists from Talkeetna and other places in Alaska interested in showing work here. Wendy came to the Flying Squirrel via one of our food vendor reps. She's from Big Lake and will show some gorgeous computer manipulated photography. Come by and meet the photographer on Saturday and support artists and their creative endeavors. Refreshments will be provided.
Flying Squirrel Thanksgiving Orders - see the flyer at the bottom of this e-mail.
Thanksgiving in Talkeetna is often a fun relaxing time to get together with friends and family. Make it even more relaxing by letting Flying Squirrel do some of the work! We will be making some really special and delicious desserts and dinner breads that will add flavor and flair to any Thanksgiving table. And we will also have mixed whole grain or pumpernickel croutons that will certainly be better than the same old store bought white bread ones! Orders should be place by November 21 to ensure that we will make enough! Please stop by the cafe or send an e-mail to get the order form.
November Hours
We are making a big effort to keep consistent easy to remember hours. Here is the plan for the upcoming holiday season:
Regular Hours: Wednesdays-Sundays, 7:30am-7pm
Open Wednesday, November 25 - regular hours. Order pick-ups: 2-7pm.
Open Thursday, November 26 (Thanksgiving Day): 10am-noon for order pick-ups (and coffee) only.
Closed Friday, November 27.
Open Saturday, November 28 & Sunday, November 29 - regular hours.
Whole Wheat Radio Live at Flying Squirrel!
Music and art enrich our lives in so many ways. I have often thought to myself...what would MY life be like if Joni Mitchell or James Brown or Van Morrison, Frida Kahlo, Degas or Monet decided to be carpenters or work in an office instead of sharing their incredible creations. Whole Wheat Radio brings independent musicians that don't get much commercial radio exposure and world wide listeners together in an unusual interactive web-cast-only format. Very soon, we will be able to listen to Whole Wheat Radio in real time and we will continue to play mostly independent music as the background for eating great food at Flying Squirrel. Thanks to Jim Kloss for making this possible. Tune in to Whole Wheat Radio any time to check it out, or even better, tune in on Friday mornings at 11am Alaska time for an hour of who-knows-what specially focused on the Flying Squirrel! Why not?!
Coming Up
Watch for an e-mail & facebook update with something fun during Thanksgiving weekend - any ideas? As soon as the brick oven is ready for it's first firings, we will be planning a grand opening, first pizza night, and oven-warming celebration, maybe in early December. We hope to be selling fresh bread at Cubby's Marketplace by early December as well. December's Second Saturday art opening will feature local husband and wife duo Peg and Kevin Foster with ironwork and antler baskets. The reception for that will be December 12, 3-6pm. Check out the Flying Squirrel website for updates to the bread schedule and calendar and visit the blog I have been keeping occasionally for oven progress, a recipe or two, and other thoughts and ramblings.
Many, many thanks for everyone's support and enthusiasm over Flying Squirrel's emergence! It's going to be a long winter, so might as well eat great food! See you soon at the Squirrel.
Keep warm,
Anita
