Hello All,

Who doesn't love March? Even in Alaska where we just got fresh snow and it's 13 degrees, Spring is in the air, the sun is shining and everyone just seems a little happier than last month. Here are a few more reasons to be happy...

March Art Exhibit and Opening Reception
Stop by Flying Squirrel Bakery Café from March 13 through early April to see an exhibit of Robin Song’s incredible photographs of animals and nature including insects, waterfowl, moose, eagles, mountains, wildflowers, horses and more. Visit with Robin during the reception on Saturday, March 13 from 3-6pm when she will have a continuous slide show of her work, and note cards, unframed and framed photos of various sizes available for sale. Light refreshments will be provided. THAT'S THIS SATURDAY! Let us know if you or someone you know would like to exhibit work on the walls of Flying Squirrel. This is a great opportunity for artists, photographers and crafters to gain exposure, exhibit work professionally in a beautiful space and sell work at a low commission. There are still a few months of 2010 that are open. Please contact me for more information.

Reasons NOT to Drive to Flying Squirrel!
There are MANY reasons to avoid driving whenever possible. Usually it means you are getting outside, walking, riding a bike, pushing a baby stroller, skiing, dog mushing, snow shoeing or maybe even roller skating! Just outside the door of Flying Squirrel there is a separated bike path along the Talkeetna Spur and a great system of hiking and skiing trails. PLEASE USE THEM!!! It's good for you and good for the world. Mention that you arrived at Flying Squirrel by non-motorized means and we will give you a small discount on your total purchases in honor of friend, bicycle advocate, and long-time Talkeetna sourdough Mike Fisher...
This month we're adding yet another great way to stay out of your car! We support Talkeetna's public transportation effort, Sunshine Transit. If you come to Flying Squirrel by non-motorized means, we'll give you the Mike Fisher discount AND A FREE RIDE HOME on the transit van anytime during the regular van schedule - don't forget, the van can take bikes too! And, since the transit van is in need of paid ridership of any kind, here's a great experiment we challenge you to try out: give your lunch a ride on the van! Call up Flying Squirrel during regular van hours, order and pay for your food by phone and we'll package it up, tack on $2 for the van ride, and call the shuttle - they'll deliver the order to your door! The fine print: this service is only available during Flying Squirrel regular business hours AND Sunshine Transit regular van schedule AND only includes deliveries to Talkeetna, East Talkeetna, the entire length of the Talkeetna Spur and within 1/2 mile off of the Talkeetna Spur. If this works, maybe we'll try pizza delivery next month! By the way, Sunshine Transit van ride tickets are now available at Flying Squirrel. Just ask at the front counter.
Special Events in March
March is a busy month. First of all, it's already Oliver's 4th birthday on the 15th! Then, the first day of Spring brings the Oosik Classic ski race to town on the 20th. Here's a tip for locals that want to avoid the downtown hubbub...come see what pizza specials we have that night (hint: what's an Oosik without BRATS?!?). Also, if you or someone you know is planning to ski in the race, make sure to come to Flying Squirrel on Sunday - we plan to have an Oosik special that will fill you back up after Saturday's fanfare. Please be sure to tell new folks in town to come check out Flying Squirrel - word of mouth is by far the best and most affordable form of advertising. Also in March...this year, the Jewish holiday of Passover is early. Our Chanukah party was so much fun, that a Passover Seder is in the works. If you are interested in attending a Passover Seder and family-style dinner on Tuesday evening, March 30, please let us know as soon as possible. A list of interested folks will greatly help with planning this event.
Summer Job Opportunities
Well, the cooking classes are definitely getting the kids thinking about future employment in the food industry, but most of them have a few more years before they can even try washing dishes for money! Flying Squirrel has a few openings for enthusiastic, dependable multitaskers to work in a variety of positions for the summer and possibly year round. I just can't do all the baking myself once we go back to 6 days a week, so the right assistant baker will be a huge help. We need a pizza cook right now for our Thursday and Saturday wood-fired pizza nights since Vinnie's leg is feeling better and he's itching to get back under cars again. We will also need front counter/barista help and a creative cook to help out Tasja a couple mornings per week. Please stop by Flying Squirrel in person to pick up an application or reply to this e-mail if you are interested.
March Hours
Wednesday-Saturday 7:30am-7pm
Sunday 8am-5pm
Wood Fired Pizza: Thursday & Saturday 4-9pm

Happy Spring - only one thing to NOT be so happy about: set the clocks forward on March 14!
Anita
