I love June! Not only did I just celebrate my birthday during the glorious weather in early June, but the green green trees, blooming flowers, fresh air and happy transplanted vegetables and herbs are enough to make anyone forget about the cold dark months behind us. As tourist season begins, I am reminded of the joys of being "out of town." Yes, occasionally we have a line at the counter, but for the most part, the Squirrel remains a peaceful place nestled in the trees where you can enjoy great food and drink. When the hubbub of Talkeetna town starts to get you down, come on over to the Flying Squirrel! Here are a few extra reasons to pay a visit:
Second Saturday Art Opening - THIS SATURDAY!
Many people know Michele Poole as one of the organizers and advocates for the Trapper Creek Fireweed Arts Council. This month we will all have the chance to see some of her photography including images she has made both in Alaska and outside. Come meet the photographer at the opening of "Picture This: Photo Impressions by Michele" during a reception this Saturday, June 12 from 3-5pm. All work is for sale and will be on display until early July.
Father's Day
Well, the news on Father's Day at the Squirrel is this: my husband and Oliver's dad, Brian has asked that for his Father's Day gift I should NOT come to work! So, although we won't have a big fancy brunch, we do plan to have a few Father's Day specials including Tasja's delicious sausage and vegetable gravy with buckwheat biscuits, bagels, Challah French toast, quiche, yogurt-granola parfaits and more.
Kids Summer Cooking Classes
There have been so many requests that we're going to welcome all those kids back into the Flying Squirrel kitchen again! Look for more info toward the end of June about upcoming classes for different age groups. Send an e-mail or give us a call if you're interested so we can be sure to get you the flyer when it's ready. Tentative dates...

Summer Hours
Stop by the Squirrel any time! We are making a lot more of our specialty sandwiches, quiches, and morning pastries with the busier summer season upon us. All of our coffee, espresso and tea drinks are available iced. We now have fresh rhubarb-ade and real fruit smoothies are in the works. There are two more pizzas on the menu every week and there are a few fun new selections on the beer and wine list. Lots of people are getting bike discounts lately and our picnic table and sandbox are used frequently. Summer staff are all trained up and I feel happy and confident about Flying Squirrel's continuing efforts to make fresh, creative, thoughtful food our highest priority.
