Happy New Year!

Well, I think everyone has finally figured out that Flying Squirrel is back open after a winter break from Christmas to New Years. As usual, we're always trying something new and interesting over here and welcome you to come check out the day's offerings. Amazing how a week off can inspire all kinds of creative ideas, especially after a stop at Anchorage's used book store for a few new cook books to peruse! Coming back into the kitchen with 2010 in the front of my mind has also inspired some planning and I am excited to share with you all kinds of fun, interesting and delicious opportunities coming up in January and all the way into the spring.

Cooking classes

Cooking Classes for Everyone!
Kids in the Kitchen was so much fun and such a big hit that we're doing it again! This time classes will be every other Sunday afternoon and will be an international culinary adventure with each day focused on a different country. Click here for more info on kids cooking classes (pdf).

So many people have asked about classes for grown-ups, that we're going to give it a try. Join us at Flying Squirrel for a Kitchen Quest - four cooking classes for adults and teens that will cover the bases from the basics to whole grains to fancy sauces. Classes will be held the last Sunday afternoon of the month. Click here to find out more about cooking classes for adults (pdf)! And, just so noone feels left out...there will be one class later this spring for all the Littlest Chefs out there - save March 18 for an afternoon cooking program for the 3-5 year olds!
PIZZA pizza daddy-o! Brick Oven Update and, YES, PIZZA IS COMING!
It's hard to miss the almost completed brick oven prominently housed in between the kitchen and dining room at Flying Squirrel. And now, it's sporting some wild, colorful flames both inside and out!
A few more finishing touches are still left to go, but we have now had several fires in it and even made some delicious pizzas at a staff party just before the holidays. So, cosmetically finished or not, we're finally going to start using it and the next time you see Brian, he will likely be outside splitting wood to try to keep up with the oven's appetite! Speaking of appetites, please bring yours to FLYING SQUIRREL'S INAUGURAL PIZZA NIGHT next Saturday, January 16, 4-9pm! We know there will be plenty of kinks to work out, but we're pretty sure you'll enjoy the finished product.
art on the walls Art Opportunities
Flying Squirrel's big, bright open space seems very flattering for all kinds of artwork - we have already had four successful and varied shows including photography, mixed fabrics, ironwork and basketry. We decided to forgo an art opening in January since the holiday break took almost two weeks away from the current show of Peg & Kevin Foster's amazing creations.
If you haven't seen their work yet, you still have another month to come by and check it out. We are excited to try to keep fresh work rotating through the bakery and have several shows lined up for the coming months. Artists interested in displaying their work at Flying Squirrel should contact me at their earliest convenience - February is one of the month's that is open!
Looking Ahead
Holidays are truly what we make of them. At their worst, they can seem hollow, commercial, stressful even. But at their best, a wonderful opportunity to gather with loved ones and share time. I would like to try to strike a happy medium - providing a few fun and meaningful events to mark seasonal festivities at the Flying Squirrel with delicious food, a joyful atmosphere and friends and neighbors to enjoy it with. As a first year business, it's all a grand experiment and we'll learn quickly what works and what doesn't, what you, the customers want that's different and what you love most that we're doing already. With all that in mind, we hope you'll join us for a Valentine's Day Sunday Brunch next month, a Passover Seder event in late March, and something special for all the Mother's in May.

Progress is being made on a trail from the back door of the Flying Squirrel to Tigger Lake. Brian is hoping to groom it very soon and from Tigger Lake, it's just a quick hop over to the maintained ski trail at Talkeetna Lakes Park (X-Y)! You'll be able to park at Flying Squirrel, go for a great ski, then satisfy your thirst for a bowl of soup or a hot chocolate. We're even making delicious, nutritious and satisfying energy bars to take along in your pocket.

Anyway, brave outdoor enthusiasts can give it a try anytime. We'll let the rest of you know when it's a bit more manageable.

It's great to see the sun shining straight into our windows, but it will be even better to watch it climb a little higher every day. I hope you are all getting outside more than I am!
Warmly,
Anita
