Hello All,
Yes, it's February already and it's incredible to think that summer is right around the corner. I can tell because I have begun to get inquiries about wedding cakes and summer employment! Even though February is short and supposedly Talkeetna is very quiet this time of year, there is an awful lot going on. Here are some things to look forward to at Flying Squirrel this month... |

The Apron Invitational
Most of the time we end up wearing inexpensive, commercially produced, white, professional-style aprons in the kitchen at Flying Squirrel. So many creative folks around here make wild and wonderful aprons!
|
Handmade aprons, whether soiled and stained or pristine and perfect, have stories of their own and remind us that art and creativity go hand in hand with cooking and food. Come by for an opening reception on Saturday, February 13 from 3-6pm to meet some of the crafters who made the aprons that will be adorning our walls through the second week in March. ATTENTION ARTSY AND CRAFTY FOLKS: Bring your old or new handmade aprons to Flying Squirrel by Thursday, February 11 to be included in this show. Aprons may be for sale, or not.

Valentine's Day Brunch
February 14, 11am-3pm
With Valentine's Day on a Sunday this year, it's too hard NOT to do something special. Bring your favorite Valentine or your children or your friends to a Sunday Brunch on February 13 from 11am-3pm. We're going to doll the place up with table cloths and roses as well as some beautiful live piano music by Deborah Windham. |
For $35 per couple (or $20 for singles) you'll be able to choose from a special brunch menu including creative brunch entrees, decadent pastries and delicious beverages. Satisfy both your romantic side and your hungry side with a choice of sweet or savory crepes, biscuits and gravy, whitefish salad or smoked salmon bagel sandwich, Valentine's soup, or Challah French Toast. We'll have red mimosas, mocha latte specials, and a fun variety of Valentine's cookies, truffles and cheesecake, of course! Reservations are recommended, please call 733-NUTS for more information. Also, look for some fun Valentine's treats in the pastry case over the next couple of weeks.

Cooking Classes
Kids cooking classes are in full swing. We've been to Mexico already and this month will travel to the Middle East and Southeast Asia. We're finding that every cuisine in the world includes some kind of traditional foods that are stuffed or filled or rolled. There is still room for more participants (click here for more info), especially in the older kids class (8-12) from 2:30-4pm every other Sunday. There must be too much going on for adults, however. Despite a good amount of interest and inquiry, not enough folks preregistered for the adult cooking classes. I am happy to have a Sunday afternoon somewhat free once a month. So, we'll try it again another time.

Wood Fired Pizza is Now Available Thursday & Saturday Evenings!
The wood fired oven is a dream. For more details on what it's like to bake in it, read my blog entry from a few weeks ago. Bread is moist inside and crisp and crunchy outside. The oven stays hot for days. We can used the residual heat to roast mushrooms, garlic, red peppers and chickens or to bake muffins and cookies. Vinnie has really gotten the hang of slinging those pizza pies onto the hearth and is learning the best methods and timing for raking the coals around the oven to keep the hearth hot and the pizza crusts crisp. I must say, it's pretty darned yummy pizza! The pizza menu changes weekly and can be viewed on our website; we have green salads on those nights, we can do pizzas for take-out or eat-in; and come check out our fine and fun selection of beer and wine. By the way, Pizza Night will NOT be held on Saturday, February 27 - we hope that most of you will be headed over to the fundraiser dinner for Murray Nash starting at 5pm. We will be open regular hours that day 7:30am-7pm.

Marching Forward
Every year March seems like the most hopeful month with longer days, more sun, and still great conditions for getting outside. Brian and Oliver have been working on the trails and I finally got to test them out a few times lately. Out the back door of Flying Squirrel is a very nice groomed trail that connects to Tigger Lake, Teacher's Pond and beyond - all are welcome to give it a spin! This year, March will bring a photography show by Robin Song with the opening on March 13. We are also planning a special Passover Seder and dinner on March 30. More details on these events next month.
