February 2012

Hello to all,
Our winter break was delightful and besides being cold last week, like everyone else in Alaska, it's also great to be home. We found ourselves missing the delicious bread, coffee, pizza, and ruggelach that we are used to...and our pillows. Perhaps the cold snap has finally broken and we'll start seeing some more folks getting out since there's so much beautiful snow and lots to do in February...

Art from the Daycare children Second Saturday Art Opening
Stop by this week if you had your eye on one of Laura Wright's photographs of people, places and dogs around town. February's art on the walls of the Squirrel will feature Talkeetna's Littlest Artists - art by the children at Sunshine Station Day Care Center.
Over the last year, a grant from the Jessica Stevens Community Foundation has helped fund art projects every week. Opening reception, Saturday, February 11, 2012, 3-5pm including kid-friendly finger foods and creative kids activities. The March exhibit will bring Talkeetna newcomer Heather Shinness's pencil sketches.
Valentine's special brunch Valentine's Specials and other ways to say I Love You!
Is Valentine's Day genuine or Hallmark? You be the judge. But just in case you get into the whole Valentine's thing (or if you just forgot how yummy and fun it can be to have brunch at the Squirrel), stop in on Sunday, February 12 for Valentine's brunch specials! Brunch will be available from 9am-2pm.

This year, it'll be less formal but still a treat for you, your valentine, your family or anyone! Crepes to order because I love them so much, our regular breakfast offerings like quiche, French toast and bagels all with fresh fruit on the side. A great deal on raspberry mochas and mimosas. Plus, a rose and two truffles with any purchase over $20! Also, during the next couple of weeks, stop in and pick up one of our Valentine's sweets for someone you love: truffles, mocha cream hearts, linzer cookies, and heart shaped cutouts will be making their annual appearances!

Kids in the Kitchen: Warm it Up
Young cooks are invited into the kitchen yet again to work with me on fun and creative cooking projects. This class will include some warm snacks perfect for a winter party - everyone loves fondue! We'll prepare fruit, bread and veggies to go with a cheese and a chocolate fondue then have a little party right here at the Squirrel.

Fondue can not only be a healthy snack, but teaches about artful food presentation and the importance of eating as a social activity. The date for this hands-on workshop will be Sunday, February 26 with a class for ages 4-6 from 1:30-3pm and a class for ages 7-10 from 3:30-5pm. Look for the signs at the Squirrel and around town or call for more info.

Après Ski Discount
(or sled or snowshoe or run or dog sled or other outdoor activities). For the months of February, March, and April, we will extend the Mike Fisher non-motorized means discount to anyone who comes into the Squirrel after a minimum of 30 minutes of outdoor physical activity.

In part, this is to support and encourage children (and adults) participating in the Healthy Futures program at Talkeetna Elementary, but also to share our enthusiasm and appreciation for getting outside during the winter months and during break up. Plus, there's nothing like a hot cocoa or a warm chai after skiing or sledding! We're working on our trail out the back door so skiers can connect up with the new trails and beyond. Keep your ears open for the second annual Poker Ski which, rumor has it, may happen sometime in February. Don't forget to sign up to ski the Oosik early this year - you can save enough money with early registration to pay for pizza at the Squirrel between the race and the big party!

Winter Hours
We are back to regular winter hours, closed Monday and Tuesday, pizza nights on Friday and Saturday, and Full Circle Farm boxes on Thursday afternoon. For more information, click here for the bread schedule, click here for our hours of operation, and click here for the weekly pizza menu!

That's all for now!
Warmly,
Anita
